Good For Your Gut: Top Foods and Drinks to Try

We all care about our general health and wellbeing. But all too many of us don’t pay proper attention to it. Sure, we can try to keep up with the basics. We eat our recommended calorie allowance, and we try to get our recommended amount of exercise on a weekly basis. But when it comes to caring for more specific parts of our body, many of us fall short of the mark. One area of health that many of us struggle with is our digestive health and our guts. These can often give us problems, ranging from bathroom problems, to heartburn, and more. It’s important to start taking proper care of your gut, and one element of this can be the food that you put into it. Here are some top gut friendly foods and drinks that you might want to try out on this journey.

Kombucha

Kombucha is a relatively new drink for many of us, but its history goes back centuries. This is a fermented, sweetened black tea drink that is ideal for your gut health. It is fizzy and has a sour taste, but many companies now add fruit, herbs or flavourings to ease this. Popular flavours tend to include ginger, raspberry and more. Of course, when bought from the store, kombucha can be pretty expensive. It’s a premium drink that comes with a premium price. But the good news is that you can make your own and save with a good kombucha recipe. Sure, it may seem complicated to start with, but you’ll eventually get the hang of it and then it will become easier!

Kimchi

A traditional Korean side dish, Kimchi has skyrocketed to popularity in Western culture over the past few years. This dish is made by using the napa cabbage and Korean radish. It is fermented and flavoured with gochugaru, spring onions, garlic, ginger and jeotgal. Different levels of chilli can be added to make it more or less spicy, according to taste. Kimchi is particularly good for your gut health, so is definitely worth a try.

Kefir

As you may have guessed, the key to many foods that are good for your gut is fermentation. Kefir is another fermented drink that can help with your overall gut health. Unlike the previous options, kefir is not suitable for vegans or those who are lactose intolerant, as it is a fermented milk drink, but if you have no problems with dairy, this could be great for you! Cultured from kefir grains, it is a great source of calcium, protein, and B vitamins.

Sourdough

Sourdough bread is a more gut friendly form of bread than other varieties. Studies suggest that it can function as a prebiotic, which means that the fiber found in the bread can help to feed the “good” bacteria in your intestines. This can help with your general gut health, helping to maintain healthy and stable digestion.

These are just a few suggestions of gut friendly foods, but each could really help out and play a valuable role in your diet if you’re considering supporting your digestive health!

  13. As one who has digestive issues, I was happy to find that sourdough was a bread that people with IBD could tolerate. It's one that I buy exclusively now. Try as I might though, I just can't get behind kombucha.
