8 Things to Consider Before Moving Home

Moving house is a big commitment. Not only does it take a lot of time to move your entire life across town or to a new city, but there are a lot of nitty-gritty legal details that need to be finalized along the way. If only moving home was as simple as moving the furniture and settling in.

For those thinking about moving home, buying your first home, or while moving, here are some things to consider to make the process as smooth as possible.

Getting Financial Advice

Moving home involves a lot of legal work. Before moving property, you need to ensure you are in a safe financial position to make the transition and purchase seamlessly. You will not want to have to deal with debt or financial disagreements mid-move. So, ensuring you understand your finances and the legal details behind purchasing a new home, you may want to seek expert advice.

For example, you may require some help regarding the transaction itself to get the best deal. There are many benefits of a cea register, such as protecting customers’ welfare and equipping them with the necessary knowledge to conduct their real estate transactions with due diligence. Thus, the help of a cea register may help you make a better property decision with regards to your finances.

Tell Your Landlord

For those renting a property, you will need to give your landlord a heads up before moving out. When you finalize your moving date with the new property, you should tell your landlord so that they have enough notice to find another resident.

You will often have a contractual agreement that outlines that you have to give a one-month notice anyway. So, ensuring your moving date fits in with that will help you reduce moving stress and transition from property to property as smooth as possible.

Set A Date

After you have made the purchase and settled your finances and moving notice, you will want to verify a date for you to move in with the current property owner. The last thing you would want is to move out of your current home and have nowhere to go.

Setting a date is one of the first things you should decide on before giving up your current property or telling buyers of your home that they can move in. It is best to move out of your property and into the new home on the same day. So, setting the move-out and move-in date on the same day will mean everything can be done as quickly as possible.

Redirect Your Bills

You will most likely forget about the household bills when you have the move to think about. So, getting the mail redirected before moving will help you reduce any issues after you have moved.

You will want to make sure you don’t miss any important mail if you haven’t managed to transfer everything over to your new address by the time you move. You can set up your redirect in advance of your moving day. You can put it in place for as long as you wish, but 6-12 months is usually enough time.

There’s sometimes a small charge, but it’s definitely one of the top things to do when you move house. It’s worth every penny to stop your important paperwork from falling into the wrong hands.

Find The Best Removal Deals

Moving home can be more costly than you think. It isn’t just the home you need to invest in; there are other financial costs to think about. Like, paying a removal company to move your furniture and household items into the new home.

Unless you plan to carry out the removals yourself, you should start gathering removals quotes straight away. Make this one of your priority things to do when you move house. Your budget will dictate how much support you can pay for.

If money’s tight, you could hire a van for the day and ask some friends to help you move. If you’re using a removals service, you can get a basic removals package or even ask them to pack for you and reassemble your furniture.

It’s a great idea to declutter before you move. Make a trip to the charity shop before you leave your current home. That way, when it comes to unpacking, you won’t be stuck with any unwanted stuff.

Plan Your Interior

It is highly unlikely that you will move into a new home and love everything about its interior. Whether there is a lot or a little to change, you may want to think about interior design before you move in. If there is a time where the new property will be empty before you move, you may even want to decorate it before you move in. That way, when you and your furniture get there, the only thing to do is put the furnishings in place.

For example, you may want to decide on choosing your living room color. You may dislike the home’s current color palette and want all of the walls to be grey. So, painting them before you move in will save a lot of time and stress once you are there.

Get Insured

Whether you’re renting or buying, it's a good idea to protect your possessions against loss or damage anyway. You can get cover for during the move and afterward.

All new homes need insuring. You will not be able to legally move in until insurance is in place. Once you know the details of your new home, you can get insurance up to 30 days in advance. You just have to schedule it to start the day you pick up the keys. As you can do it so far in advance, it’s a good one to tick off of your ‘things to do when moving house’ list nice and early.

If you’ve already got insurance, double-check that it covers you during the move. It’s important to let your insurer know about your change of address too. You might have to pay to change your policy.

Get To Know Your Surroundings

If you are moving to a new neighborhood or country, you may want to spend some time discovering its local grocery stores, restaurants, and post office before you move. Getting to grips with a new place can take some time. If you get to know the area a little bit before moving, you will feel more settled and ready on moving day.
