There is a place to visit in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that you might not think of off the top of your head, but it is so worth the time to do: T.I.G.E.R.S. Preservation Station. We did the photo opportunity, which is one of the several options available to the public at Doc Antile's Myrtle Beach Safari. Two of the other big ones, which were not in season when we were there, are the once-in-a-lifetime day and night safari tours (children must be at least 6 to go on safari). Those tours are not inexpensive, but they were absolutely RAVED about by everyone who took them and shared online in reviews. The common consensus by those writing the reviews was that it is something they never thought they would be able to do in the U.S., and it was worth every penny.
The acronym T.I.G.E.R.S. stands for The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species |
The option that was available when we were in town was the Preservation Station where you can get your photo taken with various baby animals. There are people there (they are on every side of those getting their pictures taken) to instruct you on how to hold each baby, and make sure the animals don't try to run away if the person holding them gets skittery and moves away (like if you see big paws and freak out for half a second, which my big, brave boy would never do did). Once he got past that though, and it only lasted a second, his face lit up with happiness. Imagine the joy of being able to hold animals you might never even see in the wild, in your whole life! It was really quite the treat. Top-Left, baby tiger (that cub makes my 5 ft. 7 in. cub look rather tiny); Top-Right, White Tiger Cub; Middle-Left, Red-Ruffed Lemur; Middle-Right, Gibbon; Bottom-Left, again with the white tiger cub; Bottom-Right, baby chimpanzee.
You get a free 8x10 printed and the rest on a digital download to take home with you, if you buy the full package. We were so happy with our experience. Being able to touch and interact with animals we usually only see behind glass or on a TV screen was amazing. In fact, it was one of, if not our most favorite thing that we did while we were on vacation in Myrtle Beach. I highly recommend it for any upcoming vacation time. It's something everyone in the family will remember for a long time to come. Learn more by visiting the Myrtle Beach Safari website. You can also follow them on Facebook, YouTube and/or Twitter.
It sounds amazing and I will admit to a smidge of jealousy. That is the sort of experience to hug to yourself - for years.
ReplyDeleteWe've seen it but didn't pay the extra for the photos. We will some day though.
ReplyDeleteWow that looks like an experience of a lifetime. I'm going to read more about the company and find out more about that they do xoxo

ReplyDeleteOMG, this is so fun! There's something similar in Southern Indiana that Allison is begging me to take her to. I think it would be about $300 for her and I to do, so not really cheap either, but I do agree that the experience would probably be worth the cost.
ReplyDeleteOMG that would be a visit of lifetime. You know going to the Zoo is fun and learning for kids but this tour would be so different.
