This is the photography book of photography books when it comes to travel. The story tells the thoughts, ideas and workings of the photographer, and shows you the fruits of his labor too, all throughout this gorgeous piece of work! That in itself is appealing, but the photos he takes are astounding, and some of the places he travels to are as well.
The book is chalk full of quality information too. The story of the little girl holding a lamb in Peru instantly comes to mind. Author and Photographer David Noyes warns that while that may be a photo tempting to take, that the chances are high the child is working too and will expect to be paid for that picture. He also acknowledges how such practice is not authentic...and that you can tell, is something he strives for continuously (and achieves well!) with his work.
The anecdotes that go with the photos make you feel like you are there, in the crowd, watching while the artist brings to life in a picture what he's thinking in his mind.
The discussion on photographing humans is one I hold to debate. While I agree wholeheartedly that it adds that element of authenticity to travel photos, I also know for me, it is something that is very hard to do. I don't want to offend, or incite someone with my camera, most especially in a foreign land, but even here at home too, so I don't intentionally photograph strangers. Pity... I can see too, because the photos Noyes has of people are engaging, and yes, authentic. They definitely serve to transport you to another land. There is one photo of a woman in Kenya that I simply cannot quit staring at... the lifestyle of the woman is described without a word from her, it's all right there in the details of the picture.
The Photographing Tourist: A Storyteller's Guide to Travel and Photography is a joy to own, and it would be an awesome gift idea as well. The work is magnificent and one to be appreciated, and I'm glad Mr. Noyes took the time to put it together in a book for us to enjoy.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: DAVID NOYES
As a travel writer and photographer, David Noyes has been fortunate to visit some of the world’s great places and has been touched by both the beauty and tragedy of the human condition. He has received numerous awards for his photography and travel writing including the North American Travel Journalist Association (NATJA) Travel Photographer of the Year, three consecutive years, and two prestigious Lowell Thomas Awards for excellence in travel journalism.
A graduate of R.I.T. and Harvard University, David started his career as a corporate and advertising photographer. He was also the founding publisher and editor of two award-winning lifestyle and travel magazines, including AAA Western and Central New York’s membership magazine. In 2013, David launched Innocent Eyes Project, Inc., a United States-based nonprofit corporation that supports child education programs in the developing world. He lives in Buffalo, New York.

ReplyDeleteReading about Mr. Noyes's background, journey, and numerous accolades was fascinating-- I was completely absorbed just by the "About [the author]" section of his website! I can only begin to imagine how captivating this book must be.
