Award Winning Book Giveaway! The Photographing Tourist: A Storyteller's Guide to Travel and Photography
Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. All opinions stated are genuine and my own.
This is the photography book of photography books when it comes to travel. The story tells the thoughts, ideas and workings of the photographer, and shows you the fruits of his labor too, all throughout this gorgeous piece of work! That in itself is appealing, but the photos he takes are astounding, and some of the places he travels to are as well.
The book is chalk full of quality information too. The story of the little girl holding a lamb in Peru instantly comes to mind. Author and Photographer David Noyes warns that while that may be a photo tempting to take, that the chances are high the child is working too and will expect to be paid for that picture. He also acknowledges how such practice is not authentic...and that you can tell, is something he strives for continuously (and achieves well!) with his work.
The anecdotes that go with the photos make you feel like you are there, in the crowd, watching while the artist brings to life in a picture what he's thinking in his mind.
The discussion on photographing humans is one I hold to debate. While I agree wholeheartedly that it adds that element of authenticity to travel photos, I also know for me, it is something that is very hard to do. I don't want to offend, or incite someone with my camera, most especially in a foreign land, but even here at home too, so I don't intentionally photograph strangers. Pity... I can see too, because the photos Noyes has of people are engaging, and yes, authentic. They definitely serve to transport you to another land. There is one photo of a woman in Kenya that I simply cannot quit staring at... the lifestyle of the woman is described without a word from her, it's all right there in the details of the picture.
The Photographing Tourist: A Storyteller's Guide to Travel and Photography is a joy to own, and it would be an awesome gift idea as well. The work is magnificent and one to be appreciated, and I'm glad Mr. Noyes took the time to put it together in a book for us to enjoy.
NOTE: If you can't wait to see if you win, you can order now and use the coupon code FRIEND at checkout to receive a $5 discount and free shipping in the USA.
I love the over-sized softcover book and am very happy to have it as a part of my reading collection. You can learn more and purchase the book by visiting Mr. Noyes' website (it can also be purchased at Amazon.com). You can also follow him on Facebook and/or Twitter.

Beautifully illustrated with more than 300 photographs from around the world, and featuring twelve magazine-style travel narratives, THE PHOTOGRAPHING TOURIST takes you on a journey to remote corners of our fascinating world. Through a blend of tips, techniques, advice, anecdotes, and stories, Noyes will help you develop the well-trained eye of a travel photographer and inspire you to explore new places and cultures in more depth than a simple snapshot can reveal.
THE PHOTOGRAPHING TOURIST explores the photographic challenges of traveling on a guided or escorted tour—the “tour” in tourist. For a photographer, traveling as a tourist presents many challenges, the most significant is the constraint of an itinerary. “Meet back on the bus in 30 minutes” are dreaded words if you hope to create beautiful photography in an unfamiliar place. That doesn’t mean that you can’t produce great photography on a tour; it just means you need to appreciate your travel experience and make the most of the thirty minutes, hour, or two hours you have before moving on to the next location.
Filled with Noyes’ stories about isolated cultures, exploring local life, and challenging personal adventures, this storytellers guide to travel and photography reads like an eight-month collection of your favorite travel magazine. From environmental portraits and local lifestyles, to landmarks and sacred places, the chapters explore different photographic subjects that a tourist photographer will encounter. Sprinkled throughout the book are also technical shorts with valuable information on elements of design, composition, depth of filed, exposure, using lines, and developing a point of view.
The Photographing Tourist was written to be a timeless book that is as much about the experience of traveling as a photographer, as it is the techniques of travel photography. You will learn to think differently about travel and photography and to investigate a destination as part of the human condition. Above all, this book will encourage you to truly cherish your chance encounters as you photograph the world.
