When the weather is warm, Sundays are for Antiques on the Bluff in St. Joseph, Michigan. It's free to go, and they set up May - October. We took a stroll through last weekend and came across some pretty cool looking items. Some I recognized, others I had no clue what they were or what they were supposed to do.
|
Anyone know what this is? |
The item above I did not recognize at all. If anyone knows what it is, I'd love to hear about it. The one thing that was certain is it's very old.
|
This seat is the exact color of the drapes in one the rooms in our house |
The bench in the picture above has a seat color that matches the drapes in one of our rooms. If we would have had my SUV instead of the car, I'd have really, really wanted to bring this bench home.
|
I loved this too!
|
I'd have brought the little girl reading a book home too, but the price tag stopped me on that one. ;)
|
I'm thinking since an iron is on here it's an ironing board. All I can say is 'wow!' |
The old iron I recognized. In fact, my mom had one for show in the house when I was a little girl (she's downsized a lot over the years so I doubt she still has it). Since it's set up the way it is, I'm guessing it's on top of an old ironing board. A very old ironing board. And all I can say is, WOW! That's not a lot of space to work in but it is very cool looking.
|
There were several sets of old skis |
St. Joe is a beach town, so I wasn't really surprised to come across several sets of the old wooden water skis.
The old desks were fun to look at and compare. I noticed a lot of chalk paint going on with them though. One lady was trying to get us to buy her desk and telling us how she did the makeover. I asked her if she used Annie Sloane, and she said, 'who?' hahaha I blame the blogs for that one. ;)
|
Nostalgia at its finest for me. :)
|
My grandma used a big tub like the ones above for her laundry. She never did want an electric washer & dryer and she used the old wringer washer the whole time she was alive. I used to love to help her feed the clothes through the wringer mechanism. I am sure she didn't like carrying/dumping those tubs...thought that is something I didn't think of until long after I was grown (she never complained about it once).
I also remember having this kind of glass in our house when I was growing up. I think my mom had amber, and maybe green? I have a pink candy dish in the house that came with the very first home I purchased. It's a memento for me that I don't see myself getting rid of any time soon, though I never take it out and use it.
|
This one had a price tag of $125 on it |
I don't know anything about pricing old toys, but when my son asked for this old truck priced at $125 to come home with us, I shook my head nuh uh. It does look like it's seen some happy days though, and I can see a little boy (or girl) loving it tons.
I thought this old tool chest was nice! Tool chests gets used a lot though, so I imagine it'd be hard not to scrape the wooden ones up quite a bit just from every day use. I can understand why today's are made of metal.

Swings up on the bluff
|
They have big swings up on the bluff. You can sit there and watch the cars below if you look one way, and watch the boats moving by if you look in another direction. My son thought that was the coolest concept ever. I like that he's so easily amused. :)
It was a nice way to spend the day, browsing around at the antique items. Some prodded our memory banks too, and that was probably the best part of the trip for me. All we purchased was a book, but it was still fun looking. I always love to visit St. Joe, and Antiques on the Bluff has just made it that much more special. Be sure to stop by if you're in the area during the season! Who knows what kind of great treasure you might find!
I think the guys from American Pickers would've had fun there.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a wonderful place to spend the day; btw, they still make and sell Carrom games, I used to love playing it!
ReplyDeleteI love perusing antiques!! We have a couple of cool little antique stores here in the little town I live in and I love going in them and just spending hours looking around :)
ReplyDeleteLooked like a ton of fun and will say we have Depression Glass, too (at least my grandmother did).
ReplyDeleteChris and I love looking around in old antique stores. We have SOOOO many of them around my area, too. You came across lots of cool stuff.
ReplyDeleteI think I only went down there a couple times when I lived there. Aren't I silly? It's really neat to see all those old treasures!
ReplyDeleteI love the girl reading a book! I enjoy looking through antique stores, even if not buying. Sometimes one of the mental health clients I help wants to go to antique malls. We treat it like a museum visit - we enjoy looking at all the treasures but never buy (and it helps her with socialization skills).
ReplyDeleteFun! I want to go antiquing!
ReplyDeleteIf the handle rotates, then the item looks to be a laundry wringer. Or a press of some kind?
ReplyDeleteI would love to have a walk around here, think i would spend all day lol.
ReplyDeleteNot even sure what that first one is. The kid statue is cute. You'll have to bring the suv next time haha
ReplyDeleteI love junk shopping, garage sales, and antiquing so it was so much fun to visit your blog today! I love the big metal tubs. I am a junky for that sort of thing. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteYou never know what you can find at such places
ReplyDeleteIt is fun to go to antique shows or flea markets.. there are so many hidden treasures there.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a neat place to go. We don't usually spend much time looking at antiques, but it's fun every once in a while.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the comment from Lindsay. Based on the other stuff there, there seems to be a theme. Very cool antique stuff. I love the truck. I wonder if it was Tonka? They don't make stuff like that anymore. I know I banged my toe into my brothers Tonka truck and you could get some serious scrapes off of them too. My mom also has a pink candy dish.
ReplyDeleteI would have had a good time there. I'm not into antiques, but I love to look at old stuff from long ago. Too fun.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day. ☺
cool finds, I am too impatient for this kind of thing, but it looks fun
ReplyDeleteThat is how we shopped when we moved in here. We have 3 amazing pieces from that! This is a great way to shop.
ReplyDeletethanks,
mItch
That is quite the attraction, but I especially remember those pans for washing our laundry. I used them for many years :)
ReplyDeleteI remember you shared about that too Rosey.
I love antiques... I have a couple from my great grandmother. I wish I had more, she had unique furniture ♥
ReplyDeleteI would have bought a desk if the price tag was ok. I have a desk downstairs, but it's too big for the space needed.
ReplyDeleteThe thing you were questioning my husband would have wanted for a sculpture. I have no clue what it is either, but it looks cool!
I love old things!
Those are a lot of great finds. I love that chalkboard desk.
ReplyDeleteMichelle F.
I haven't been to their antiques on the bluff section yet. What great finds. I really love that old desk and the little truck!
ReplyDeleteThose water skis are really cool! They bring me back to my water skiing days.
ReplyDeleteLooks like fun with some great finds!
ReplyDeleteI admire your restraint. My fingers would have been itching and my wallet burning.
ReplyDeleteThe first item? Looks like an implement of torture to me.
I love antiquing! The desks are really cute.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it all :)
ReplyDeleteI wish I could afford to buy all sorts of antiques, I would be in heaven!
That must have been a blast. I love looking through antique marts like that. You just never know what you might find
ReplyDeleteAntiques have a way of evoking nostalgia, don't they? I especially love that bench up there. I wouldn't mind having one like that myself :)
ReplyDeleteRosey, could that be a crank wringer washer. It looks like one I seen as a kid.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lot of unique finds. A great way to spend an afternoon.
ReplyDeleteHow old is the bench that's the same color as the drapes in your house?
ReplyDeleteI didn't ask because I knew we weren't going to bring it home. I would have liked to though, it's very pretty to me. :)
DeleteI would love a place like this, antiques are cool. One weekend my oldest and youngest went to this yard sale place with me - the guy had a lot of old items and he actually took the time to show my little man what each item was (Because my little man was asking 100 questions). So cool!
ReplyDeleteI hope you were able to score a lot of great picks at this event.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! I love antiques and I adore looking for old stuff. I am so jealous that we don't have more of those places in Phoenix!
ReplyDeleteOMGosh how fun! I love the old desks and the water tub things, very cool!
ReplyDeleteThey have a lot of nice stuff here. The truck would be cool to play with but not at a $125 price tag.
ReplyDeleteThe drapes in our dining room are the same color as the seat of that bench.

ReplyDeleteWow! Definitely a lot of neat stuff there! Grant and I used to go antiquing before the kids. I tried to buy and resell on Ebay for a while there, but never really turned a big profit doing it. I will still sell an item here or there. I have a cool old tea tin that I can sell you for a great price! ;)
ReplyDeleteLooks like a treasure trove of antiques! I love stuff like that.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great treasure trove of things. I have no idea what the roller thingy is but it looks like some kind of press. Tin? or laundry?

ReplyDeleteGreat post! Lots of neat items. I always take only the amount of money I can spend to antique, junk shops and garage sales, else I would be in trouble. Looks like a fun outing. Thanks for sharing. -Paula Parker
ReplyDeleteI have to stay away from antique sales because I wouldn't have any money left. When I go home to the Midwest I love going to them because I know I can't buy and bring home on the plane. I love those buckets!
ReplyDeleteI love antique shopping. It is very relaxing and awesome when you find those special treasures
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what that first item is. Butter churn? Torture device? It's cool! I love looking at antiques.
ReplyDeleteLOVE antique shopping! I am especially fond of the bench at the top!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE those washtubs! That is totally something I would have brought home with me!
ReplyDeleteThat ironing board, wow... I am diggin' the green glasswares!
ReplyDeleteHistory is so fascinating. My grandparents had an iron and board similar to that. The iron rested on hot coals. She also had those washtubs as well. It's quite intriguing how they lived. Everything is mostly automated today, so we rarely have to work a sweat to get our jobs done. But, our ancestors didn't have these things that we claim make life easier...they did it all manually and (most of the time) didn't complain.
ReplyDeleteI love the little girl reading a book too!!! That does look like it would be a neat and fun trip!
ReplyDeleteOh wow I am in heaven thinking about a day like this!
ReplyDeleteI love going to antique sales like this. Even if you don't buy much, it's great inexpensive entertainment and an opportunity to learn about history.
ReplyDeleteWe love antique hunting! I recently bought an antique stove.
ReplyDeleteWow looking at those antiques is like journey to the past. Aren't these antiques beautiful and creative? I don't know the uses of some of them as I didn't grew up in the US.

ReplyDeletethanks for all you share!! <3<3<3
I love going to antique stores. The problem for me is that they are always cram packed and I have some mobility issues, so I cannot get around very well. This place looks wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOooohh... My eyes grew wider and wider as I read this post-- well, saw the photos, really. :) I just kept thinking, upcycling! upcycling! upcycling!
ReplyDeleteI would have really enjoyed seeing this. I would be walking around for hours!
ReplyDeleteThe rack under the wash tubs is something I recently saw on TV Flea Market. They ended up making cushions to go on, really looked good. I like looking at old things and I have been there on having the wrong vehicle and finding something.
