Ryan Air offers inexpensive flights...very inexpensive flights. We once used them to go from London to Glasgow, and then back again. It was definitely a no-frills flight. The seating was first-come, first-serve, and delays were to be considered very, very common. We were on vacation, and the flights were less than $20 each way, so we didn't mind a bit.
Today I read the same airline is very seriously considering transatlantic flights from approximately 12 to 14 cities in the U.S. to approximately the same number of cities in Europe, for $10.
$10?!?!?? hahahahahaha!! HA!
The article I read can be found here.
That very important matter aside, the next thought that comes to mind is excess fees. That airline is already notorious for tacking on fees any and everywhere possible to make up for low fares. I shudder to think what baggage fees would be on an overseas flight, a hundred dollars per pound?? Would there be fees to click your seatbelt? Kidding (sort of). Seriously, the costs would have to be made up somewhere, and if costs aren't transparent (especially if they take you by surprise) they feel, for lack of a better term, sneaky.
You can't get from your house to the grocery store in some cases, on ten dollars worth of gas, much less fly across an ocean. Not to mention the no-frills flight may be fine for very short-term flying, but might not be quite so tolerable for a long-term flight.
I'm not on board with this one.
Would a $10 transatlantic flight fly with you?
Both puns intended. ;)
I would definitely be curious to if it would be worth it.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how much I would trust a 10.00 flight... on top of it you are right Rosey... they would tack on the charges somewhere and safety first :)
ReplyDeleteThis is intriguing for sure. I would like cheaper flights but i'm not willing to give up safety for it. I'm still hoping to get a good price on tickets to CA this summer for son and I.
ReplyDeleteCheaper flights here (and not that cheap) are often illusion. As you say, by the time the add-ons are in place, the savings have gone. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteAnd safety is paramount in my book.
A $10 is very suspicious to me. There has to be a hidden catch somewhere. I'm not sure if I'd trust this deal. I think I agree and won't be on board right along with you.
ReplyDeleteI guess it all comes down to you get what you pay for. I agree with you. If i'm travelling its with my family and I want the best for them!
ReplyDelete$10 for a flight seems crazy cheep to me. Way too cheep! Scary cheep!
ReplyDeleteMy last transatlantic flight charged more than $10 in taxes alone, let alone the base far price! LOL - even checking a bag is more than $10 nowadays.
ReplyDeleteGosh, I'm not sure. When I first read what you were writing I was like "Awesome!" but you raise a good point about safety and quality. I worked for the airlines for eight years, I'm a picky flier.
ReplyDeleteIf it looks to good to be true, it usually is
ReplyDeletefor $10? Yes. yes I would. more than once.
ReplyDeleteI would be worried about safety too. How would they pay for flight attendants etc? No thanks, I wouldn't want to fly my family using that airline :)
ReplyDeleteYea that would be a no.
ReplyDeleteI always think I'm going to die when I fly.
Imagine flying with an airline where it was worth $10 to die. wow.
Okay that was morbid, but really I do think that way on every flight! I can't help it!
What's the catch? There is a catch.
Airplanes are NOT cheap! No way!
hahaha no friggin way. End up in the ocean on that heap. If it costs $10 to get there, they have to forgo much in the way of safety features. Better off taking a hot air balloon
ReplyDeleteHmm depends, I think I'd see how they go. Air travel here is expensive because of the distance to Europe &North America, we've had a few of tose cut priced ones come here they don't last most go bankrupt because its not sustainable.
ReplyDeleteI totally appreciate a good value but $10 flights don't make sense. They wouldn't make enough money to cover expenses, fuel, salaries, etc and get the flights off the ground. I'd be worried they'd go under and leave me flightless.
ReplyDeleteI think I would skip it, but my sister is the adventurous type, so I bet she would do it.
ReplyDeleteThey need to bring that here to Canada, for us to go anywhere your looking at $1000
ReplyDeleteIt would definitely make me wonder how they managed to drop the price that drastically and what you are giving up in return.. I would have to look into it a lot more I think, though just on principle alone I wouldn't count it out :) x
ReplyDeleteA ten dollar plane ticket sounds a bit insane, I think I would skip it and then be on the ground whining about missing out. HAHAHAHA!
ReplyDeleteThere is a Mega Bus that you can get for $1 to different cities in the US. The thing is, everytime I ever tried to get it, it was more than a $1 and it only took you one way that day. You had to wait for another day to get a mega bus somewhere else. I would have to check a $10 flight out really well.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I purchased an airline ticket, it was really expensive. I'm glad to see that travelers have cheaper options now.
ReplyDeleteI know the extra fees would not be a great thing to face but they do have to make it up somewhere. I would rather they charge extra fees or higher prices than to find out the hard way they skipped maintenance or staff.
ReplyDeleteI don't know $10 sounds like there WILL be hidden fees somewhere. It is quite intriguing though
ReplyDeleteheck i might actually make it to europe at those fairs...ha...i hear you...but that would be very cool...
ReplyDeleteThat kind of makes me think there's a catch somewhere LOL But I'm pretty critical of these kinds of things!
ReplyDeleteA price like that would make me scared! I'd start wondering what they cut to get to $10 and I'd be worrying it was safety measures!
ReplyDeleteThey must make up the price somewhere I am sure. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is.
ReplyDeleteI'd do it. When I lived in Hawaii they had $1 and $7 flights in the summer if you wanted to island hop.
ReplyDeleteSounds really too good to be true! Safety is on top of my list too and being inexpensive is good, but being tooooo cheap doesn't appeal to me either. Makes you wonder what they are cutting to save such costs!
ReplyDeleteAi @ Sakura Haruka
You are echoing the concerns of most people in the UK. I agree with you. Safety is a huge thing and I'm not sure I could fly long haul with Ryanair.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a scame.. wonder if it will work. :)
ReplyDeleteOh when it sounds too good to be true we really have to wonder if it is indeed too good to be true!
ReplyDelete$10 is really cheap! Definitely check it out more. It's either a scam or they are giving no consideration to passenger safety for that low of an amount.
ReplyDeleteWow... $10, really? That's really cheap, but as you lay it out for me, it doesn't sound so safe. I don't think I could board a plane not knowing they have my best interest and safety at heart. My family needs me to return safely.
ReplyDeleteConsidering the requirements the FAA places on planes that travel to the U.S., yes, I'd feel safe and take advantage of it. Of course, I'm sure they'll fee you to death!
ReplyDeleteI don't fly like ever but you better believe as long as it was safe I'd be flying lol.
ReplyDeleteFor that cheap i am not sure i would have gotten on the plane.. But i will check out the site and see what i can find..
ReplyDeleteSounds too suspicious to me. I would think the fees would probably be crazy if the flight is so cheap too.
ReplyDeleteI am already afraid to fly at full price, so yeah, I would be very leary of that!! I agree, $10 is the price for a short trip by car, let alone a flight across the ocean.
ReplyDeleteNope. I'd definitely be worried I was getting what I paid for. Yikes!
ReplyDeletePretty daughter ~ What comes to mind is 'you get what you pay for' ~ but then again ~ greed is everywhere and where is the healthy medium ~ xxx
ReplyDeleteHappy Week to you and great post ~
artmusedog and carol
I'm not sure how that would be feasible for them, even on a no frills budget.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a great deal. Unfortunately, I have never flew in an airplane before and I don't know if I ever will.
ReplyDeleteIf $10 were the "final" price, I would definitely be curious enough to look into it. Sometimes airlines have gimics to get widespread attention.
ReplyDeleteI flew to Europe (from NYC) on the cheap once. Not that cheap, but pretty cheap. I swore I'd never do it again because the soreness, jet lag and discomfort took a huge toll on the first part of my vacation. But, $10 is pretty amazing.
ReplyDeleteSounds too good to be true. BUT I would still look into it. My parents keep getting these free vacations for sitting through time share presentations.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, it might be worth it just to get from point A to point B, but I don't know, with rising fuel prices this time of year, everything this going up. I agree, seems a bit sneaky.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds really interesting. I'm not sure how I feel about a $10 transatlantic flight!
ReplyDeleteI just can't believe they would be able to keep running charging that fee. Something is not right.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds too good to be true, so I would definitely be researching!
ReplyDeleteI have not been on a plane since I was 2 years old. I still do remember seeing the little dots of light below us though.
ReplyDeleteI'd probably skip that one. We took a cheap flight yo Florida and thankfully it was on a 2 1/2 hour flight. It was so small, uncomfortable, and it couldn't wait to get off. I can't imagine going across the pond on a flight like that!
ReplyDeleteSo not worth it to me, as 10 is a little too cheap for me....
ReplyDeleteThere obviously would have to be some sort of catch, extra fees like you mentioned, or a very limited number of seats or something. I would image their costs would have to be at least a few hundred dollars per passenger for the flight.
ReplyDeleteWow I would really love to hear any experiences on those flights.
ReplyDeleteMichelle F.
I'm not so sure about a $10 flight to anywhere. I get the value, no-frills part but there's no way to even cover their costs at that price. I think I'll pass on that one!
ReplyDeleteDefinitly would raise a red flag here. I would worry about my safety as well. I don't think I would be able to let that price fly.
ReplyDeleteThat's crazy cheap for a flight! I may be interested if it were just me, but I'm not sure I would want to take my toddler.
ReplyDeleteI don't know this airline. I wonder how they came up with $10.
ReplyDeleteNo Way No How!!
ReplyDeleteI've never taken a $10 flight, but I have booked on an "inexpensive" airline and they then added on baggage fees that cost more than the ticket (for a carry on!) I'd be suspicious too!
ReplyDeleteThat would make me doubt of its security purposes.. :/
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time hearing of this airline. Would I do it? Depends on how safe they were. I'd have to check out the airline ratings. I'm not worried about losing luggage, I'm more worried about losing my life and that of my family who usually travels with me. :)
ReplyDeleteThat price sounds too good to be true, there has to be some catch.
ReplyDeleteIf I could get a $10 flight to Japan I would be all over that! Well as long as they were safe and all that.... I dunno, I'd maybe risk it anyway.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like an awesome deal but yeah, safety first. I would be scared to get that flight.
ReplyDeleteI don't know...sounds like they would be cutting cost somewhere to be able to let people get flights as low as 10$ I'd be skeptical for sure lol
ReplyDeleteI honestly would not even attempt it. I'm scared of airplanes already. This would not make me feel better at all. lol
ReplyDeleteI did a really cheap transatlantic flight when I was bregnant. And I DO NOT recomend it. I'm sure it would be a great option for students, though.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to get a discount once in a while, but when fares are that low all the time, I might want to rethink it.
ReplyDeleteIn general I dont mind cutting a few corners to save on cost. But not when safety is an issue and certainly not on a transatlantic trip. I have a feeling it will end up costing way more then $10 if something goes wrong.
ReplyDeleteI have never been on a plane. So when I do get on one I would want to make sure that the airline is not cutting cost to the point to where it is making customers safety an issue. I definitely would not pay $10 for a transatlantic flight.
ReplyDelete$10 a flight! Really? That sounds scary low to me!
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of military space available flights. Their prices are just as low and first come, first serve. I don't know that they're cutting costs as much as scrimping to find seats that would otherwise go unfilled. I once was on a plane from Paris to the US that some connecting flights had not been able to get to the airport for so there were only about 20 people on the flight. We each had our own row of seats to sleep in. I imagine that these $10 flights are the airlines way of recouping some of the costs of running flights like that wherein passengers have to be scraped up literally last minute. I'm sure my flight from Paris cost the airline much more than they made because of the circumstances. That $10 a seat maybe would have helped them not to have to waste what was already prepared for like meals for missing passengers, etc.
ReplyDeleteThat just sounds ridiculous to me. I can't imagine that it is safe or comfortable for that long flight...
ReplyDeleteIt did for me for the longest time...when I lived in London over 10 years I only flew with Ryanair (maybe standards have changed since then!). At the time $10 flights always ended up costing $100 with all the extra charges, lol! I never actually really thought about "safety" but then again I was young and cheap, lol!
ReplyDeleteI think you're right to suspect fees to make up for the low fare!
ReplyDeleteThose are cheap flights. Wouldn't it almost be faster to drive from London to Glasgow?
ReplyDeleteCute and funny picture of your daughter!
It's a little over an hour to fly...a little over 6 hrs. to drive, I think. We didn't have a car though. We haven't been brave enough to rent a car yet, while on vacation out of the country. The laws of driving intimidate me, and the speed intimidates all of us, lol. :)
DeleteNothing is cheap these days...always a trick up the sleeve..and those halts made it prove it ;)
ReplyDeleteliked your daughter's silly expressions...lol
that sounds great... as far as cheap...
ReplyDeletebut it sounds scary too... lol - there is no way i would fly on it
